SEED
BANKING
WHAT.
Establish a secure network of ex-situ collections to conserve climate threatened tropical mountain plants.
WHY.
Long-term conservation through seed banking is used for many temperate zone plants with small, easily-frozen seeds, however the seed of many tropical plant species (such as avocado and mango) are large and full of moisture, making the difficult to store long-term.
HOW.
Seed treatments that will allow long-term storage of some of our target species. Many target species fruit sparsely and irregularly, putting the pressure on field workers to find sufficient seed to supply the essential research.
